At the end of January 2026, Yadegar Asisi will celebrate a new world premiere at the Panometer Leipzig with Antarctica. The monumental 360° panorama depicts the icy vastness of the white continent in all its facets – from towering glaciers and shimmering icebergs to the fascinating wildlife of penguins, whales, and seals. It is an artistic staging that powerfully conveys the untouched beauty and fragility of this unique natural environment.
“Antarctica is a place of paradox,” says Asisi. “It is the last great natural reservoir and yet not a paradise. It is eternal, yet fragile. In its untouched vastness, it reveals itself as fragility.”
The panoramic depiction plays with the waterline as a central perspective: above the surface, massive ice formations rise into the sky, while below the water the hidden life of Antarctica becomes visible. The 32-meter-high circular view can be experienced from a platform that appears to float on the water in front of the Antarctic ice shelf – offering a glimpse into a world otherwise accessible only to a few researchers.
Antarctica is Yadegar Asisi’s fifth nature panorama, following Everest, Amazonia, Great Barrier Reef, and Carola’s Garden.

You book a fixed date for your visit to the Varieté. The extra ticket for the zoo visit is not tied to a specific day and is valid until March 20, 2026 (winter ticket).
